Research area
Her present research is on the contemporary American war film and war today. She just edited the anthology War Isn’t Hell, It’s Entertainment: Essays on Visual Media and the Representation of Conflict, in which she contributed an article and the introduction. She is working on a book about the American war film after 1991, Utopia & War: The American War Film in a New World Order, 1991–2009 and with Anne Gjelsvik she is editing the anthology Eastwood’s Iwo Jima: A Critical Engagement with Flags of Our Fathers and Letters From Iwo Jima (Wallflower Press, 2010). She organized the conference “Visions of War in a New World Order & Clint Eastwood’s Flags of Our Fathers (2006) and Letters From Iwo Jima (2006),” held at the University of Southern Denmark on May 5, 2008. The Danish Minister of Defence, Søren Gade, was first speaker.
Since 1993, Rikke Schubart has done research in the American popular film after 1970 and its relation to contemporary culture, myth, and history. She has written books and articles about American film and genre, American film and myth, and popular film and gender. Her earlier central work has been about the female hero (Super Bitches and Action Babes: The Female Hero in Popular Cinema, 1970-2006, McFarland, 2007), the action cinema (Med vold og magt: Actionfilm fra Dirty Harry til The Matrix, 2002, Rosinante), and the horror cinema (I lyst og død: Fra Frankenstein til splatterfilm, 1993, Borgen). She was chief editor of the Danish media journal MedieKultur from 2003 until 2007.

Communication in the media
RS is regularly interviewed in the television and radio about relations between American film and culture, politics, and history. Some examples are P1 Esmanns verden, one-and-a-half hour program with political scientist Vibeke Schou Tjalve from Danish Institute for Military Studies (May 24, 2007, about John Wayne and American politics), P1 Orientering (March 27, 2006, about the U.S. and soft power), P1 Agenda (July 8, 2006, about Hollywood and history) and DR2 Deadline (October 19, 2005, about American film and historiography). She has written articles, feature articles and reviews for, among other, Politiken, Jyllandsposten, and Ekko.
