This article is a contribution to linguistic interactionnist approaches to human/animal communication. Human/animal communicative phenomena are frequent in everyday ordinary life, at home or at work, and have nevertheless hardly been investigated so far. Ethology, focused on species-specific considerations, has trouble to deal with interspecies communication, and linguistics has long been first and foremost centered on articulated verbal language – which is human by definition. Drawing on audio and video data collected in authentic natural settings (versus experimental), this article identifies three prominent modalities for addressing a pet animal, and examines their pragmatical effects. These empirical findings allow to rethink bigger issues usually raised when human/animal relationships are concerned: animal agency, attribution of intention, and the fundamentals of mutual adjustment.
